[单选题]On a dry and cold Friday afternoon last October,Sharon Seline exchanged text messages with her daughter who was in college. They “chatted”back and forth, with the mom asking how things were going and the daughter answering positively followed by emoticons(表情符)showing smiles,b-i-g smiles and hearts.
Later that night.her daughter attempted suicide.
In the days that followed,it came to light that she’d hidden herself in her dorm, crying and showing signs of depression—a completely different reality from the one that she conveyed in texts and Facebook posts.
As human beings, our only real method of connection is through real communication.Studies show that only 7% of communication is based on writing and speaking. The majority of 93% is based on body language.Indeed,it’s only when we can hear a tone of voice or look into someone’s eyes that we’re able to know when “I’m fine” doesn’t mean they’re fine at all.
This is where social media gets risky.
With modern technology, anyone can hide behind the text, the e-mail,or the Facebook post, projecting any image they want and creating a false image of their choosing. They can be whoever they want to be.And without the ability to receive body language, their audiences are none the wiser.
This presents a paradox which doesn’t exist before. With all the powerful social technologies at our fingertips,we are more connected—and potentially more disconnected—than ever before. Every relevant metric(衡量标准)shows that we are interacting at a great speed and frequency through social media. But are we really communicating? With 93% of our communication context(语境)lost,we are now attempting to establish relationships and make decisions based on phrases or emoticons, which may or may not accurately represent the truth.
What phenomenon does the underlined word“paradox”( Paragraph 7)reflect?
APeople can be both happy and unhappy.
BPeople can be both connected and disconnected.
CPeople can end up being both wise and stupid.
DPeople can form both true and false impressions.

[单选题]If you are like most people, your intelligence varies from season to season. You are probably a lot sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of the year.A noted scientist, Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), concluded from other men's work and his own among peoples in different climates that climate and temperature have a definite effect on our mental abilities.
He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative thinking than is summer heat. This does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year.It does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.
Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's mental abilities are affected by the same factors that bring about great changes in all nature.
Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long vacation from thinking!
Ellsworth Huntington decided that climate and temperature have __.
Aa great effect on everyone's intelligence
Bsame effect on most persons' intelligence
Csome effect on a few persons' intelligence
Dno effect on most persons' intelligence

[单选题]
People are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems be-tween the first generation and the second generation because they don´t have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their ethnic identity.
For example, my aunt, who has been living in Chicago for twenty-five years, has three children and they were all born in the States. The eighteen-year old daughter speaks English as a native language and she speaks Korean very well too. She has no problem stalking with her parents, but she still does n´t understand Korean jokes, and there are sometimes misunderstandings. The second daughter is fourteen years old, and she does n´t want to speak Korean. My aunt often gets upset with herbe-cause she is very Americanized and they cannot understand each other. Even when my aunt punishes her, this daughter does not understand what my aunt is talking about. The third child is a twelve-year-old son. He speaks English to his parents and my aunt speaks Korean to him as she does to the second daughter. He also has a problem communicating with his parents. My aunt is trying to teach him to speak both languages, but it is very hard for him because he speaks English all day and does not understand why he should learn to speak Korean.
We must realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort to make their children understand their heritage by teaching them the parents´ language. This is very important, not only for the harmony of the family, but also in helping the second generation establish their identity.
To whom does the mother speak Korean?
AHer oldest daughter only.
BHer two daughters only.
CAll of her children.
DOnly to her son.
